SS United States Conservancy to Discuss Redevelopment Plans for America's National Flagship at Cruise Shipping Miami Conference, March 16th, 11:30 a.m.

Leaders of the SS United States Conservancy, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of the SS United States, will release its initial plans for restoring and redeveloping the nation's "ship of state," the vessel that still holds the speed record for fastest trans-Atlantic crossing.

"Having claimed title to the SS United States only last month, we are determined to permanently preserve this iconic American symbol," said Susan Gibbs, the Conservancy's board president, whose grandfather, William Francis Gibbs, designed the vessel. "We are now moving forward aggressively in considering potential public-private partnerships in New York, Philadelphia, and Miami. We plan to convert the vessel into an exciting multi-purpose stationary attraction featuring hospitality, dining, meeting, retail, and performance venues, along with a world-class museum."

In July 2010, the Conservancy announced a pledge of $5.8 million by Philadelphia philanthropist H.F. "Gerry" Lenfest towards the SS United States' purchase and maintenance for 20 months. Vessel owners Norwegian Cruise Line/Genting Hong Kong entered an exclusive purchase option with the Conservancy last year, graciously declining a bid twice as high from a scrapper. The Conservancy acquired title to the vessel on February 1.

"We are actively seeking partners and supporters as we carry out this complex undertaking," said Gregory Norris, the Conservancy's treasurer. "We are grateful to Cruise Shipping Miami for facilitating our participation at this event. We hope to receive support and advice from the cruise industry as we strive to save this symbol of American innovation. We have only a very short window of time to accomplish this complex undertaking."

"We are reaching out to many potential partners as we begin laying the groundwork for the SS United States' next chapter," said Gibbs. "The ship offers some 650,000 square feet of space to develop, and her interiors can be configured in a variety of ways. She has the potential to be a dazzling and dynamic urban waterfront attraction. The SS United States was an American original and we'll pay tribute to the ship's extraordinary history as we redevelop her for a new era."

The SS United States was launched in 1952 and is widely considered the greatest ocean liner ever built. Four U.S. presidents and countless foreign heads of state, business, military, and diplomatic leaders, Hollywood celebrities, and everyday Americans traveled aboard her during 400 mishap-free voyages. Thousands of immigrants came to America aboard the vessel, which served in the Navy Reserve Fleet as a convertible troop ship and Cold War weapon able to carry an entire army division 10,000 miles without refueling.

Details of the potential partnerships in each city will be announced over the next several months as the Conservancy continues to refine its design, partnership and financing plans.

SPEECH OF THE GREEK MINISTER OF MARITIME AFFAIRS ISLANDS AND FISHERIES,

    MR. IOANNIS DIAMANTIDIS.

    (Delivered Wednesday, March 16, 2011)

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thank you for your presence today that honors Greece and Greek Tourism. May I be allowed to mention that Greece has the best Tourist product upon its competitors in the Mediterranean region. And I would like to explain that in a short way.

The Greek mainland with it's immense coastlines and the amazing beaches, is connected with a lot of important and world wide known archaeological and historical sites. Greece's numerous beautiful islands are ready to offer hospitality, pleasure, peace or even good night life to its visitors. Greece is a safe and beautiful destination for vacations for everyone regardless of age, sex or income. Greeks ever since the ancient times and up to this day, love and take care of their guests and make sure that they always have a great time. We want the visitors of our country, islands, towns, beaches to feel good and enjoy their holidays and the famous Greek hospitality.

I am the Minister of Maritime Affairs Islands & Fisheries responsible for the Cruise Shipping and I will focus on the Cruise. The last months we implemented a law that is allowing Cruise Ships under non European flags to embark their guest's and start cruises from Greek ports. We are here today in Sea Trade Cruise Shipping Miami, to discuss with all cruise line companies, so as to explain them, that they may choose Greece and its ports as a starting point for their cruises. Meanwhile the recent events in North Africa, demand a new approach from all of us. Participating in the sea trade exhibition we had a chance to meet and discuss with the Executives of the Cruise Companies in order to give all the necessary explanations and convince them to include Greece in their cruise itineraries.

In Greece's Booth are also participating representatives of the Boards of the Greek Port Authorities in order to answer any questions you may have. The agreement that we are asking the Cruise companies to sign with the Greek State in order to establish this new cooperation, is nothing more than a written statement of collaboration. It's a win-win collaboration for both parties under solid ground. We want the Cruise companies to consider us a permanent partner. This is why we give them the possibility to come back to us with specific suggestions for their investment plans to the areas of their interest and with any infrastructure development suggestions in our ports in order for their clients to receive a better service. I would like to explain in a few words the statement of collaboration that we are calling the Cruise companies to sign.

To begin, all necessary paperwork and certifications needed are just a few and the whole process is done just once by the company. It is valid for maximum 3 years and the Cruise company has the right to end it without any cost. We want the Cruise companies and the Greek Ports to have the possibility to plan better their activities and services. The Greek state decided through this statement of collaboration to give specific motives to the Cruise companies to receive 7% reduction in the cabotage fees for every Greek port they call and a specific percentage of reduction again in the cabotage fee for a specific percentage of Greek Seafarers that they employee in their Cruise Ships.

I would also like to emphasize that already the port taxes in Greece are much less than the port taxes in the rest of the Mediterranean. For example, Piraeus the main Greek Port is 40% less expensive than the rest Mediterranean ports. In order to make the Greek ports more commercially attractive and competitive we decided to drop the prices further more as an action of good will. If you take a look on a Mediterranean map you will realize that the Greek ports are located almost in the center of the Mediterranean Sea and you can approach several destinations easily and cost effectively with maximum safety. In each destination its easy to visit several important archaeological sites. From Piraeus for instance one can visit the Parthenon and the New Acropolis Museum. In Thessaloniki which is the crossroad of several civilizations and the birthplace of Alexander the Great, many other sites are easily accessible.

I would also like to focus in the investment part of this statement of collaboration between the Greek State and the Cruise companies. The Greek state wishes those companies to invest in the Greek ports that are in close proximity with the capital towns, in infrastructure and other commercial activities. We will examine with a positive eye any suggestions or ideas that will upgrade our tourist product and will also benefit the Cruise companies. The major investment projects are going to be subject of the Fast Track model that we implemented, in order to overcome any beaurocratic obstacles and delays. Therefore any serious investment plan can be examined and verified pretty fast.

We do recognize how important safety matters are nowadays and we guarantee for the safety of all of our guests. Greece is expecting a 20% increase in the Cruise Ship calls at the Port of Piraeus, meaning 189 Cruise Ships calls more than last year. What really matters to us, is to discuss furthermore with the Cruise companies how the Greek Ports can become a starting point for their cruises. The results of all of our efforts and contacts will be visible soon.
We are here to listen to the companies, we are here to collaborate with them, we are here because together, we can develop furthermore the cruise shipping product in the Mediterranean.

CHILEAN TOURISM BOARD TO ATTEND SEATRADE 2011

Ě The Chilean Tourism Board is poised to announce two highly favourable
news developments aimed at boosting North American cruise arrivals in
Chilean ports of call including Valparaiso, a UNESCO World Heritage
    site, and others;
Ě Twelve Chile exhibitors will gather at Booth 1215,
where attendees may interact and explore tourism opportunities with
tour operators, cruise companies, airlines and a key Chilean tourism
    officials.

The Chilean tourism industry has taken up a great challenge: to dramatically increase by 45 percent the number of foreign visitors arriving in the country by 2015. The Chilean Tourism Board will attend the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention in Miami March 15-17 with significant news: Chilean President Sebastißn Pi˝era signed a decree to reduce the operational fees charged to cruise operators by the Chilean Maritime Authority. The new law will reduce these charges by 40% when a cruise vessel calls at one Chilean port, 60% when two ports are entered and 80% when three ports are visited. Also, in another development designed to boost Chile's growing cruise business: the Secretary of Economy is expected to send a bill to Congress in the near future that will allow cruise ships to operate their shipboard casinos while cruising or anchored in Chile's coastal waters.

The Chilean Tourism Board and ProChile have joined efforts to enhance the tourism sector, one of Chile's most vital economical activities. Seatrade offers an exclusive opportunity since cruise companies invest more than US$42 billion per year in direct expenses and Cruise Shipping Miami has been the international leader in cruise shows and conferences for 26 years.

In order to make the most of this great platform, with more than 10,000 travel industry executives in attendance, key Chilean tourism players will be exhibiting at the Chilean Tourism Board booth n║ 1215: DMC Chile, Metropolitan Touring Chile, Cocha and CTS Turismo; Antarctica XXI cruises; DAP Airways, the cities of Valparaiso, Coquimbo, Puerto Montt; the Region of Magallanes and the Chilean Cruise Ports.
