15 years of TUI Cruises – company anniversary in the name of sustainability: on course for a climate-neutral cruise

· Company-wide strategy bundles measures and sets concrete guidelines for sustainability at all levels
· F irst cruise line in the world with SBTi-validated emissions reduction targets
TUI Cruises is celebrating a small anniversary this year : the joint venture between TUI AG and the US cruise company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. celebrates 15 successful years at sea. From the very beginning, protecting the environment and resources has been a natural part of the work of the Mein Schiff crew on board and the employees on land. The Hamburg shipping company is now resolutely moving forward in its anniversary year: with a new sustainability strategy and an ambitious climate protection plan for its two product brands, Mein Schiff and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.
Together with the TUI Group, TUI Cruises has successfully had its emission reduction targets for climate protection independently checked. Based on the latest climate science findings and the Paris climate protection agreement, the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) confirms previously submitted targets for reducing CO 2 emissions from companies worldwide. The independent initiative is supported by the environmental organization WWF and the UN Global Compact, among others.
By 2030, the cruise lines of the TUI Group will reduce their absolute CO 2 emissions by more than a quarter (27.5%) compared to 2019. Not only are they the first in their industry to have their reduction plan approved by the SBTi. No other cruise line in the world is currently committed to such an absolute, strictly controlled climate protection goal.
The main levers for the demanding decarbonization program are: The use of low-emission fuels (e-fuels) such as green methanol and sustainable bio-fuels, the consistent use of climate-friendly shore power in the ports and ambitious energy efficiency measures on board the fleets.
The new, ambitious sustainability strategy combines the experience of 15 years of work for more sustainable cruises with a clear vision for a climate-neutral future. Developed by a cross-company team under the leadership of Lucienne Damm, Head of Sustainability, the strategy precisely defines the concrete measures with which the sustainability goals are to be achieved. Based on the recently published sustainability agenda of the TUI Group, the sustainability strategy of TUI Cruises is based on the three pillars Planet, People, Progress and defines the fields of action for the future:Climate protection through fuel transformation and energy efficiency as well as a circular business model and protection of ecosystems (Planet); Destination responsibility through shore excursions with a small ecological footprint and a sustainable supply chain along the entire product range, as well as raising awareness of customers and employees for sustainable products (people); in addition, a sustainable corporate transformation through redesign of products, innovation promotion and digitization and the further integration of sustainability into the core processes of the company (progress).
Sustainability as a corporate tradition
The fact that all employees on land and the crews on board are informed and involved is a company tradition. Environmental officers were already on board the first ships in the Mein Schiff fleet, entrusted with the task of implementing the environmental standards of the headquarters on board and constantly looking for opportunities for improvement.
T he joint experience of the ships’ environmental officers and the sustainability experts from TUI Cruises in Hamburg flowed into the shipping company’s first building, the Mein Schiff 3, whose keel-laying will be celebrated for the tenth time next month. With state-of-the-art exhaust gas cleaning, recycling and energy efficiency measures, it has become the model for the shipping company’s new construction and conversion projects to this day: the ongoing search for groundbreaking innovations in order to become a little more sustainable with every visit to the shipyard and with every new ship.
Environmental protection also has a long tradition at Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. Recently, history was made during the construction of the EUROPA 2, because as early as 2013, the EUROPA 2 was one of the first cruise ships to be equipped with a shore power connection. In the case of the expedition new builds of the Hanseatic series, investments were made in environmental technologies as standard, such as catalytic converters and shore power connections.
Wybcke Meier, Managing Director of TUI Cruises: “This anniversary year is one full of anniversaries for us. Not only are we celebrating our fifteenth anniversary as a company. Ten years have also passed since we laid Mein Schiff 3 on keel. With the consistent sustainability work on all our new ships and conversions since then, we have created the youngest and cleanest fleet on the German cruise market. We are constantly pursuing this path with our commitment to specific reduction targets, which have been confirmed by the independent SBTi. The construction of the Mein Schiff 7 has just started, the first ship in our feel-good fleet that will be able to run on green methanol and therefore almost CO 2 in the future-neutral. She will embark on her maiden voyage next spring, exactly ten years after that of Mein Schiff 3. We are keeping our sights firmly set on the goal of being able to offer the first climate-neutral cruises by 2030.”
