TUI Cruises continues growth course of the Mein Schiff fleet: Mein Schiff 7 ceremoniously taken over in Turku/Finland
10.06.2024 – Today the Mein Schiff 7 was officially handed over to TUI Cruises at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. This was celebrated at an official ceremony with invited guests by Wybcke Meier and Frank Kuhlmann, CEO and CFO of TUI Cruises, as well as Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku. “It is a special moment for us to receive this ship. 10 years ago we picked up our first Blu Motion class ship here in Turku. The Mein Schiff 3 was the first new build for TUI Cruises and by 2019 we had built a total of six ships. We would like to thank the Meyer Turku shipyard for the excellent cooperation and the development of our feel-good fleet. And we are delighted that we are now sailing to Kiel with the Mein Schiff 7 to welcome the first guests on board,” says Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises. “The Mein Schiff 7 is a sister ship to the Mein Schiff 1 and the Mein Schiff 2. It offers many things that our guests appreciate, as well as numerous new highlights based on our guests’ feedback. These include a new design, additional cabin categories and culinary highlights.”
The Mein Schiff 7 is the seventh ship in the Mein Schiff fleet to be built in Finland. “On June 14, 2022, the steel cutting of the Mein Schiff 7 took place in our shipyard,” said Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku Werft. “We are very proud that today, less than two years later, we can hand over the Mein Schiff 7 to TUI Cruises. We were able to do this because we have a good shared tradition and were able to work hand in hand.”
TUI Cruises sets new impulses in sustainability
The Mein Schiff 7 will initially be the first ship in the Mein Schiff fleet to be operated exclusively with low-emission marine diesel (sulfur content max. 0.1%) and is equipped with catalytic converters (nitrogen oxide reduction: approx. 75%) and a shore power connection. In addition, the Mein Schiff 7 was built in such a way that it can also run on methanol, potentially green methanol, which will make the ship’s propulsion almost CO2-neutral.
For the commissioning of the Mein Schiff 7, all currently possible technical equipment, such as tanks and pipe systems for methanol or green methanol propulsion, have been installed. TUI Cruises is currently developing the missing technical component for the methanol drive of four-stroke engines, which does not yet exist. The shipping company plans for the Mein Schiff 7 to be equipped and commissioned in 2026 so that it can be one of the first cruise ships to run on methanol. The methanol drive and thus a conversion is also an option for the modern existing fleet in the future. The Mein Schiff 7 plays a central role in showing that this drive works in real ship operation. Based on these findings, TUI Cruises will decide on possible retrofitting.
In order to achieve even more efficient waste processing, the Mein Schiff 7 was equipped with an innovative system that uses thermal treatment to break down organic waste and prepare it for further use on land . “HydroTreat” is a new system for processing biological waste: the liquid parts of the waste are separated using heat and pressure and fed into the ship’s own wastewater treatment plant. The end result is purified wastewater that is on a par with the most modern sewage treatment plants on land. The solid parts of the waste are transformed into so-called BioChar, which is considered multi-talented in agriculture – for example, for soil improvement or as a feed additive.
