Mein Schiff 4 receives shore power for the first time in Hamburg Another important milestone on the way to a climate-neutral cruise

05/15/2023 – TUI Cruises has committed to making the entire Mein Schiff fleet capable of shore power. The Mein Schiff 4 was the first ship in the fleet to receive a shore power connection in 2020. Today, the ship also uses environmentally friendly shore power in Hamburg for the first time. The Mein Schiff 6, which already received a shore power connection last year, is to receive green shore power immediately when it calls at Hamburg. TUI Cruises is thus taking another important step towards climate-neutral cruises. “In achieving our sustainability goals, ie − our absolute CO 2emissions by 2030 compared to 2019 – we also see the ports as having an obligation: On the one hand, the range of shore power systems must be rapidly expanded throughout Europe. On the other hand, the ports, as is the case here in Hamburg but also in Kiel and Warnemünde, must present a green electricity concept. This is the only way we can ensure that we don’t shift emissions elsewhere,” says Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises.

Further on-board shore power connections will follow by January 2024.
After Mein Schiff 4 and Mein Schiff 6, Mein Schiff 1 was the third ship in the Mein Schiff fleet to have a shore power connection on board at the beginning of May 2023.
As early as next November, the Mein Schiff 5 and in January 2024 the Mein Schiff 2 will also be equipped with a shore power connection during their stay in the shipyard. The new ships, Mein Schiff 7, which is currently being built by Meyer Turku in Finland, and the eighth and ninth ship will also have shore power connections. But even if shore power is not available in ports, the ships of TUI Cruises meet the highest sustainability standards: Thanks to the built-in catalytic converters, the auxiliary machines on board, which run in the port while the ship is docked, have been complying with TIER III since 2014 when Mein Schiff 3 was commissioned Standard for nitrogen oxide emissions. The hybrid scrubber installed on all new buildings filters up to 99 percent of the sulfur emissions and 60 percent of the fine dust.

Corporate tradition meets sustainability strategy 2030
From the very beginning, protecting the environment and resources has been a natural part of the work of the Mein Schiff crew on board and the employees on land. The Hamburg-based shipping company is now resolutely moving forward in the anniversary year, 15 years of TUI Cruises: with a new sustainability strategy 2030 and an ambitious climate protection plan for its two product brands Mein Schiff and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. By 2030, the cruise lines of the TUI Group will reduce their absolute CO 2-Reduce emissions by more than a quarter (27.5%) compared to 2019. Not only are they the first in their industry to have their reduction plan validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. No other cruise line in the world is currently committed to such an absolute, strictly controlled climate protection goal.
