My ship is using biofuel for the first time to reduce CO2 emissions. Another milestone on the way to a climate-neutral cruise

07/24/2023 – The Mein Schiff 4 was the first member of the Mein Schiff fleet to include sustainable biofuel and successfully tested it as an admixture to marine diesel during its northern voyage, the proportion being around 30%. The result: fewer emissions and another important step towards a climate-neutral cruise. The 2nd generation biofuel bunkered for the first time is purely vegetable and mainly consists of cooking oil residues. This fuel is almost free of sulfur oxides and in its pure form offers a CO 2-Reduction of up to 90% compared to fossil fuels. Yesterday, the feel-good ship set sail again from Kiel towards Spitsbergen and Geirangerfjord as well as Sunnylvsfjord. Mein Schiff 4 also plans to use green shore power while it is docked in the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein, Alesund and Bergen. The next Nordland trips towards Spitsbergen can already be booked. The Mein Schiff 7, which will then be the newest member of the fleet, will depart from Kiel on June 23, July 7 and July 24, 2024 for the archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. Due to the good connection from Kiel, cruise guests can arrive and depart comfortably and in a climate-friendly manner by train.

Concrete sustainability goals – scientifically tested and validated

The biofuel test run on Mein Schiff 4 is another milestone in TUI Cruises’ new 2030 sustainability strategy. By 2030, the cruise lines of the TUI Group want their absolute CO 2-Reduce emissions by more than a quarter (27.5%) compared to 2019. They are the first in the cruise industry to have their climate targets checked and validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). No other cruise line in the world is currently committed to such an absolute, strictly controlled climate protection goal. This goal is to be achieved, among other things, by using shore power, clean fuels, increasing energy efficiency, for example through environmentally friendly underwater silicone coatings and reducing the average speed – “slow steaming” – as well as other measures. “The completed test phase on board Mein Schiff 4 is extremely important for us and the climate goals that have been set. Then: The biofuels can be used directly in the ship’s engines without costly conversion or conversion measures. This shows once again that we are not only investing in more sustainable cruises with our newbuilds such as Mein Schiff 7 and the eighth ship, but are also making every adjustment to the existing fleet to become better and even more climate-friendly,” says Lucienne Damm, Head of Sustainability at TUI Cruises.
