About the America’s Cup

The America’s Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy, dating back to 1851 when the schooner America crossed the Atlantic and defeated the British racing fleet in a race around the Isle of Wight. The trophy was subsequently donated to the New York Yacht Club under the Deed of Gift in 1857 as a perpetual challenge trophy for “friendly competition between foreign countries.”

For more than 175 years, the America’s Cup has stood at the forefront of sporting competition, yacht design and technological innovation. From the great schooners and J-Class yachts to the 12 Metres, multihulls and today’s spectacular foiling AC75s, the competition has continually pushed the boundaries of sailing and marine technology.
