MSC WORLD EUROPA SI COLLEGA CON SUCCESSO ALL’ALIMENTAZIONE DA TERRA PER LA PRIMA VOLTA NEL MAR MEDITERRANEO
Ginevra, Svizzera – 18 dicembre 2023 – Mercoledì scorso MSC Crociere ha continuato a portare avanti il suo impegno per la sostenibilità ambientale collegando con successo MSC World Europa all’energia elettrica da terra nel porto di La Valletta, Malta, la prima centrale elettrica da terra operativa nel Mediterraneo.
La compagnia di crociere ha effettuato i suoi primi test a La Valletta all’inizio di quest’anno, che hanno portato ad affinare il processo di implementazione dell’energia da terra del porto e al collegamento riuscito della scorsa settimana. D’ora in poi MSC World Europa si collegherà alle strutture elettriche di terra mentre farà scalo a La Valletta. La nave farà scalo ogni settimana nel 2024 e nel 2025.
MSC Crociere si impegna a utilizzare l’energia elettrica da terra ovunque sia disponibile. La tecnologia è parte integrante del percorso dell’azienda verso operazioni a zero emissioni nette di gas serra entro il 2050. L’uso dell’energia da terra consente a una nave di connettersi alla rete elettrica locale ed elimina la necessità di mantenere acceso il motore della nave, eliminando così le emissioni dirette mentre la la nave è collegata in porto.
Ogni nuova nave che si unisce alla flotta MSC Crociere dal 2017 è stata dotata di un collegamento elettrico a terra, con piani in corso per ammodernare ulteriori navi. La linea è stata in grado di aumentare il numero di scali portuali utilizzando l’energia da terra poiché sempre più porti introducono le strutture richieste. Lo storico collegamento a La Valletta segue i recenti collegamenti di successo nel Nord Europa, tra cui Warnemünde in Germania; i porti norvegesi di Bergen, Aalesund e Haugesund; e Southampton nel Regno Unito. All’inizio di quest’anno, MSC Crociere ha inaugurato un nuovo impianto energetico da terra a Kiel, in Germania.
MSC Crociere punta ad aggiungere almeno 15 nuovi porti al suo piano energetico costiero tra il 2024 e il 2026, concentrandosi sui porti in Italia, tra cui Genova, La Spezia, Civitavecchia, Napoli e Trieste, nonché porti importanti come Barcellona, Amburgo, Valencia , Marsiglia, Copenaghen, e nel suo nuovo terminal crociere a Miami che aprirà il prossimo anno. MSC Crociere riconosce l’importanza della collaborazione con i porti e le regioni nel raggiungimento di pratiche marittime sostenibili. La società ha firmato un memorandum d’intesa per potenziare le strutture elettriche costiere nell’area del Mar Baltico e impegni simili vengono perseguiti con altri porti nel Mar Mediterraneo.

MSC World Europa è stata la prima nave di MSC Crociere ad essere alimentata a gas naturale liquefatto. Essendo una delle grandi navi da crociera con le migliori prestazioni al mondo in termini di emissioni di CO2eq per passeggero, MSC World Europa rappresenta un importante passo avanti nel viaggio di MSC Crociere verso l’obiettivo di emissioni nette pari a zero entro il 2050. MSC WORLD EUROPA SUCCESSFULLY CONNECTS TO SHORE POWER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA
Geneva, Switzerland – December 18, 2023 – MSC Cruises continued advancing its commitment to environmental sustainability last Wednesday by successfully connecting MSC World Europa to shore power in the port of Valetta, Malta—the first operational shore power facility in the Mediterranean.
The cruise line performed its first tests at Valetta earlier this year, which led to refinements in the port’s shore power implementation process and last week’s successful connection. MSC World Europa will connect to the shore power facilities from now on while calling in Valetta. The ship will call every week during 2024 and 2025.
MSC Cruises is committed to using shore power wherever it is available. The technology is an integral part of the company’s journey toward net zero greenhouse gas emission operations by 2050. Using shore power allows a ship to connect to the local power grid and removes the need to keep a ship’s engine running, which eliminates direct emissions while the vessel is connected in port.
Every new ship joining the MSC Cruises fleet since 2017 has been equipped with a shore power connection, with plans underway to retrofit additional ships. The line has been able to increase the number of port calls utilizing shore power as more ports introduce the required facilities. The historic connection in Valetta follows recent successful connections in Northern Europe—including Warnemünde in Germany; the Norwegian ports at Bergen, Aalesund and Haugesund; and Southampton in the UK. Earlier this year, MSC Cruises inaugurated a new shore power facility in Kiel, Germany.
MSC Cruises aims to add at least 15 new ports to its shore power plan between 2024 and 2026, focusing on ports in Italy, including Genoa, La Spezia, Civitavecchia, Naples and Trieste, as well as prominent ports such as Barcelona, Hamburg, Valencia, Marseille, Copenhagen, and at its new cruise terminal in Miami opening next year. MSC Cruises acknowledges the importance of collaboration with ports and regions in achieving sustainable maritime practices. The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance shore power facilities in the Baltic Sea area, and similar commitments are being pursued with other ports in the Mediterranean Sea.

MSC World Europa was MSC Cruises’ first vessel to be powered by liquefied natural gas. As one of the world’s best performing large cruise ships in terms of CO2eq emissions per passenger, MSC World Europa represents a major step forward on MSC Cruises’ journey toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
