Fresh treatment for Mein Schiff 1 in Hamburg’s traditional dock Elbe 17

After its winter season in the sun of Central America, Mein Schiff 1 is back in European waters and has already got ready for the summer: from April 21 to May 2, 2023, Captain Jan Fortun docked the feel-good ship from TUI Cruises for routine maintenance work in Hamburg’s traditional dock “Elbe 17”. Within eleven days, Mein Schiff 1 underwent numerous modernizations and redesigns during her stay in the shipyard. In new splendor, Mein Schiff 1 starts today on a nine-day journey from Bremerhaven towards Norway.

“A time at the Lürssen shipyard is always something special and for us, as a Hamburg shipping company, it’s a home game, so to speak,” says Ulrich Voss, Director Ship Management & Hotel Refurbishment. ” In great teamwork, shipyard workers, technicians and engineers as well as around 1,100 crew members in the dry dock prepared Mein Schiff 1 for the guests of the coming months.”

Shore power connection for almost emission-free ship operation in the port

After Mein Schiff 4 and Mein Schiff 6, Mein Schiff 1 is the third ship in the Mein Schiff fleet to have a shore power connection on board. In this way, TUI Cruises is already ensuring almost emission-free ship operation for half of the Mein Schiff fleet in ports where shore power is available. For the installation of the system, an additional door was cut into the outer skin of the ship, through which the six-centimetre-thick shore power cables are routed into the ship in the port. As early as November, Mein Schiff 5 and in January 2024 Mein Schiff 2 will be equipped with a shore power connection during their stay in the shipyard. In doing so, we want to further advance the development of external power supply in the ports and strengthen the demand for this type of environmentally friendly ship operation,” says Voss.

With the so-called “HELCOM upgrade”, the tried-and-tested wastewater treatment system has now been improved once again: In future, the strict limit values for phosphate and nitrate in the wastewater will be complied with, which were specifically set for the sensitive waters of the Baltic Sea. In addition, the outer skin of Mein Schiff 1 has received a new silicone coating. This reduces the flow resistance while driving and thus achieves significant fuel savings and thus emission reductions. TUI Cruises is thus consistently continuing to achieve its ambitious climate protection goals.

North German flair meets industrial design

In addition to the regular maintenance and the technical innovations, the time in the dry dock was also used for beautification work. This is how the Ebbe & Flut – Bier Bar shines in new splendor: In the industrial design, with numerous wood and copper elements, it invites you to linger. In cooperation with the Hamburg Ratsherrn brewery, the future focus will be on regionally brewed beers. In addition to the golden barley juice, Mein Schiff 1 offers its guests in the Ebbe & Flut beer bar a range of dishes – entirely in the North German style – with dishes from the “Altes Mädchen Ratsherrn Braugasthaus” in Hamburg.

New gallery area on deck 4: inspiration for creative people & art lovers

In the new gallery area of Mein Schiff 1, art lovers will be able to purchase a souvenir of their cruise from high-quality fine art prints to unique serigraphs and genuine one-offs. Queen’s art galleries specialize in modern and contemporary art, working closely with established and emerging international artists including James Francis Gill, Bob Dylan and SAXA. The adjoining area of the travel consultant and the shore excursion department have also received a makeover and offer many moments of well-being for the guests.

During the summer season, Mein Schiff 1 sails on various routes from Bremerhaven in the direction of Norway and Warnemünde along the Baltic Sea, before heading to the Canary Islands in autumn, where it will spend the winter season.
