Presso il cantiere Fincantieri di Sestri Levante si è svolta la cerimonia della moneta per Explora II
- La seconda nave di Explora Journeys entrerà in servizio nel 2024 con un massimo di altre quattro navi di lusso che entreranno a far parte della flotta entro il 2028, con una nuova nave che entrerà in servizio quasi una volta all’anno
- La prima nave, EXPLORA I, salperà per la prima volta a luglio da Southampton, Regno Unito
- L’investimento complessivo fino a oltre 3,5 miliardi di euro in sei navi dal design innovativo e dotate delle più recenti tecnologie ambientali riflette l’attenzione del Gruppo MSC allo sviluppo e la crescente offerta di lusso sostenibile nelle crociere
Sestri Ponente, Italia, 8 febbraio 2023 – Si è svolta oggi presso lo stabilimento Fincantieri di Sestri Ponente, vicino a Genova, la cerimonia di premiazione di EXPLORA II, la seconda delle sei navi pianificate dalla Divisione Crociere del Gruppo MSC per il suo marchio di lusso Explora Journeys. .
La costruzione della nave GT 63.900 è iniziata nell’ottobre 2021 presso il cantiere Fincantieri di Castellammare di Stabia a Napoli, in Italia, dove la chiglia della nave è stata posata nel maggio 2022. EXPLORA II entrerà in servizio nell’agosto 2024.
L’antica cerimonia marittima di oggi ha visto monete commemorative collocate all’interno della nave come segno di benedizione durante la costruzione e buona fortuna per il futuro dalle madrine delle nuove costruzioni, Feliciana Maresca, assistente esecutivo dell’amministratore delegato di Explora Journeys Michael Ungerer e Martina Mosca, Supervisor of Hull Fabrication Department, per Fincantieri ha rappresentato il costruttore navale.
All’evento hanno partecipato importanti dirigenti tra cui Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman, Cruise Division, MSC Group, Michael Ungerer e Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO, Fincantieri.
Tra agosto 2024 e aprile 2025 EXPLORA II navigherà nel Mar Mediterraneo, nel Medio Oriente, nell’Oceano Indiano e in Africa e comprenderà 82 porti in 26 paesi. La nave sarà dotata di 461 suite, attici e residenze con vista sull’oceano e disporrà di sei ristoranti, 12 bar e lounge interni ed esterni, quattro piscine, ampi ponti all’aperto con cabine private, quasi 1.000 metri quadrati di strutture per il benessere e il fitness, oltre a un raffinato intrattenimento e arricchimento.
COIN CEREMONY FOR EXPLORA II TAKES PLACE AT FINCANTIERI SHIPYARD IN SESTRI PONENTE, ITALY
- Explora Journeys’ second ship will enter service in 2024 with up to four more luxury vessels to join fleet by 2028, with one new ship coming into service nearly once a year

Sestri Ponente, Italy, 8 February 2023 – The coin ceremony of EXPLORA II, the second of up to six ships planned by the Cruise Division of MSC Group for its luxury brand Explora Journeys, today took place at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyard near Genoa in Italy.
Construction of the GT 63,900 vessel began in October 2021 at Fincantieri’s Castellammare di Stabia yard in Naples, Italy where the ship’s keel was laid in May 2022. EXPLORA II will enter service in August 2024.
The time-honoured maritime ceremony today saw commemorative coins placed inside the ship as a sign of blessing during construction and good fortune in the future by the newbuilds’ Godmothers, Feliciana Maresca, Executive Assistant to Explora Journeys’ Chief Executive Officer Michael Ungerer represented the owners and Martina Mosca, Supervisor of Hull Fabrication Department, for Fincantieri represented the ship builder.
The event was attended by key executives including Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman, Cruise Division, MSC Group, Michael Ungerer and Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO, Fincantieri.
Michael Ungerer, Chief Executive Officer, Explora Journeys, said, “The event today is another major step forward on our mission to redefine ocean travel for today`s discerning luxury travellers. EXPLORA II – and her sister ship EXPLORA I, due to perform her inaugural journey in mid-July from Southampton, UK – will blend renowned destinations seen through a different lens and unique off-the-beaten-path ports, offering the next generation of luxury travellers highly curated, transformative and immersive experiences.”
Between August 2024 and April 2025 EXPLORA II will sail in the Mediterranean Sea, the Middle East, the Indian Ocean and Africa and feature 82 ports in 26 countries. The ship will be fitted with 461 oceanfront suites, penthouses and residences and feature six restaurants, 12 indoor and outdoor bars and lounges, four swimming pools, extensive outdoor decks with private cabanas, nearly 1,000 square metres of wellness and fitness facilities, plus refined entertainment and enrichment.
EXPLORA I is currently being built at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy and will launch Explora Journeys’ fleet in July 2023 with her inaugural sailing in Northern Europe.
Up to more than €3.5 billion will be invested by the Cruise Division of MSC Group in Explora Journeys’ six ships that will all feature innovative design and be equipped with the latest environmental technologies.
EXPLORA III will join Explora Journeys’ fleet in 2026, and EXPLORA IV in 2027. If the options are confirmed, EXPLORA V and EXPLORA VI will join Explora Journeys’ fleet in 2027 and 2028, respectively.
EXPLORA III, EXPLORA IV, EXPLORA V and EXPLORA VI will be powered by liquefied natural gas. EXPLORA V and EXPLORA VI will also utilise hydrogen fuel to power both ship’s hotel operations while in port to allow the vessels to switch off their engines for zero emissions.
