Swan Hellenic ha annunciato tutti i dettagli dei quattro viaggi di spedizione culturale nel cuore del Mediterraneo per il 2024. Ad ospitarli sarà la lussuosa nave boutique SH Diana, dopo la crociera di 10 notti “Mysteries of Carthage and the Moors” (10-20 agosto 2024), che la vedrà navigare da Lisbona a Palermo, attraverso lo Stretto di Gibilterra – le a Colonne d’Ercole del mondo antico – e la costa nordafricana di Annibale.
Vediamo le quattro spedizioni mediterranee.
“Secrets of Sicily” dal 20 al 28 agosto 2024. Partenza da Palermo per una circumnavigazione di otto notti dell’isola. Gli scali previsti sono Trapani – vicino alle rovine di Selinunte del VII secolo a.C.; Mazara del Vallo – uno straordinario mix di tutte le culture che hanno lasciato traccia in Sicilia; Porto Empedocle con il sito di Agrigento, patrimonio dell’UNESCO, e successivo excursus internazionale nella magnifica città fortificata di La Valletta a Malta. La nave SH Diana salperà da lì per Siracusa – una delle città più grandi e potenti del mondo antico, Giardini Naxos vicino alla pittoresca Taormina e infine Lipari, la più grande isola delle Eolie, prima di completare questa rara circumnavigazione a Palermo.
Questa crociera fa parte del programma Swan Hellenic’s Maris Culinary Discovery at Sea Series in collaborazione con JRE-Jeunes Restaurateurs, l’organizzazione gastronomica che raggruppa gli chef under 40 che hanno già ottenuto riconoscimenti internazionali, come le stelle Michelin. Lo chef Nikita Sergeev, proprietario dell’acclamato ristorante Arcade, premiato con una stella Michelin, accompagnerà questa spedizione servendo un piatto d’autore diverso ogni sera del viaggio, fino a una straordinaria cena di gala creata per mostrare della propria creatività e abilità.
“From Magna Graecia to Greece” dal 28 agosto al 5 settembre. La spedizione parte da Palermo per un viaggio di otto notti nel cuore del Mediterraneo. Si naviga verso le isole vulcaniche di Lipari e Stromboli, per fare successivamente rotta verso Giardini Naxos e Crotone con il suo castello del XVI secolo e il parco archeologico di Capo Colonna. A Seguire Otranto, famosa per il castello aragonese del XV secolo, la bella cattedrale e le ricche rovine bizantine, e Sarandë, in Albania, amata per le spiagge, la vita notturna e per i numerosi siti antichi UNESCO che si trovano nelle vicinanze. SH Diana condurrà poi i suoi ospiti nell’affascinante città di Preveza, in Grecia, all’imbocco del Golfo di Azio, vicino alla città imperiale di Nikopolis, che Ottaviano fondò nel 31 a.C. per celebrare la sua vittoria su Antonio e Cleopatra. Itea è il penultimo porto di scalo, a pochi passi dall’antica Delfi, nota per il suo oracolo, prima di concludere il viaggio presso il Pireo, porto di Atene.
Questa spedizione è inserita nel programma Explore Space at Sea Series in collaborazione con il SETI Institute e ospiterà il Dr. Mark Showalter, famoso astronomo planetario, che accompagnerà gli ospiti durante il viaggio, sia a bordo che a terra e terrà tre conferenze dagli interessanti titoli: “The New Horizons Mission to Pluto and Beyond: An Insider’s View”;“The Chaotic Worlds of the Outer Solar System”; “The Antikythera Mechanism”.

Si salpa per un’odissea di 11 notti dal Pireo, facendo scalo a Monemvasia, una delle città medievali meglio conservate d’Europa, ad Adama sull’isola vulcanica di Milos -nota per le sue catacombe paleocristiane e per il suo teatro antico, e a Rethymnon a Creta, con vestigia storiche risalenti alle dominazioni di Veneziani e Ottomani fino alla civiltà Minoica. Seguono Mandraki, sulla suggestiva isola di Nisyros, la piccola Symi, con una storia sorprendente per le sue dimensioni, e Rodi, rinomata per il suo Colosso perduto, una delle sette meraviglie del mondo antico, e per la sua Città Vecchia, tutelata dall’UNESCO, costruita dai Cavalieri di San Giovanni nel XIV secolo. A seguire, l’affascinante isola di Patmos, la cui storia religiosa è legata al Libro delle Rivelazioni, seguita da Kusadasi, sulla terraferma turca, che confina con i magnifici resti della città romana di Efeso. Tornando all’isola, la SH Diana farà scalo a Chios, città natale del poeta Omero, e a Mitilene, capoluogo di Lesbo, prima di raggiungere Canakkale, porta dei Dardanelli e nei pressi della antica città di Troia, cantata e resa nell’Iliade di Omero. L’ultimo giorno intero sarà dedicato alla navigazione nei Dardanelli prima dell’approdo nella vibrante Istanbul, ultima tappa di questa spedizione eccezionale.
“Cultures of the East Mediterranean” dal 16 al 24 settembre 2024. Nave SH Diana parte da Istanbul per trascorrere 8 notti lungo le coste della Grecia e della Turchia verso Cipro. Ci sarà modo di esplorare i segreti di Kavála, nota nell’antichità come Neopolis, la cui cittadella bizantina è oggi circondata dai tortuosi vicoli di un’incantevole “città vecchia” ottomana. I porti di scalo successivi saranno Salonicco, la seconda città della Grecia moderna, con un’imponente presenza di gloriosi monumenti di tutte le epoche; Volos, patria del mitico Centauro e luogo di nascita di Giasone e dei suoi Argonauti; Chios, che deve la propria fama ad Omero; Kusadasi, con Efeso fondata nell’XI secolo a.C. e l’anfiteatro dove predicò San Paolo. A seguire, Heraklion, attuale capoluogo di Creta e nell’antichità importante centro della civiltà minoica, nota per il Palazzo di Cnosso che fu sede, secondo il mito, del labirinto e del Minotauro. Infine Rodi e Limassol, la seconda città per importanza di Cipro, situata tra gli antichi siti di Amathous e Kourion.

Swan Hellenic has announced full details of its four 2024 cultural expedition cruises in the heart of the Mediterranean. All will be aboard the luxury boutique ship SH Diana, following on from the 10-night cruise “Mysteries of Carthage and the Moors” (10-20 August 2024), which will see her sailing from Lisbon, Portugal, through the Straits of Gibraltar – known as the Pillars of Hercules to the ancient world – then along Hannibal’s North African coast and on to Palermo, Sicily.
The four Mediterranean cultural expedition cruises are:
“Secrets of Sicily” – 20 to 28 August 2024 – which departs Palermo for an eight-night circumnavigation of the island, calling at Trapani – neighboring the ruins of 7th century BC Selinute, Mazara del Vallo – an extraordinary mix of every culture to leave a trace on Sicily, Porto Empedocle with the UNESCO Heritage site of Agrigento, then the magnificent, fortified city of Valetta in Malta. SH Diana will sail from there to Siracusa – one of the largest and most powerful cities in the ancient world, Giardini Naxos near picturesque Taormina, and finally Lipari, the largest Aeolian Island, before completing this rare circumnavigation cruise to Palermo.
This cruise is one of Swan Hellenic’s Maris Culinary Discovery at Sea Series in partnership with JRE-Jeunes Restaurateurs, the gourmet organisation for chefs under 40 who have already won international acclaim, including Michelin stars to their name. Chef-owner Nikita Sergeev of the acclaimed Michelin-star Restaurant Arcade in Italy will be accompanying this cruise, serving a different signature dish every night of the voyage, leading up to an extraordinary Gala Dinner created to showcase their creativity and skills.
“From Magna Graecia to Greece” – 28 August to 5 September 2024 – leaves Palermo for an eight-night exploration of the heart of the Mediterranean, sailing to the volcanic islands of Lipari and Stromboli, then on to Giardini Naxos, and Crotone with its 16th-century castle and Capo Colonna archaeological park. Otranto follows, distinguished by its 15th-century Aragonese Castle, beautiful cathedral and rich Byzantine ruins. Next comes Sarandë,Albania, beloved for its beaches and nightlife, but equally fascinating for the many UNESCO-listed ancient sites nearby. SH Diana will then take her guests on to the charming city of Preveza, Greece, at the mouth of the Gulf of Actium, close to the imperial city of Nikopolis, which Octavian founded in 31 BC to celebrate his victory over Antony and Cleopatra. Itea is the penultimate port of call, just a stone’s throw from ancient Delphi, famed for its oracle, before this voyage concludes in Piraeus, port of Athens.

The last full day will be spent cruising the Dardanelles before this exceptional voyage comes to an end in vibrant Istanbul.
“Cultures of the East Mediterranean” – 16 to 24 September 2024 – sees SH Diana depart from Istanbul to pass 8 nights hugging the coasts of Greece and Turkey on her way to Cyprus, pausing to explore the secrets of Kavála, known as Neopolis in ancient times, its later Byzantine citadel now surrounded by the winding alleys of an enchanting Ottoman “old town”. The next ports of call are Thessaloniki – thriving second city of modern Greece, with an imposing presence of glorious monuments from across the ages, Volos – homeland of the mythical Centaur and birthplace of Jason and his Argonauts, Chios of Homeric fame, and Kusadasi with 11th-century BC Ephesus and the amphitheater where St. Paul spoke. Heraklion, capital of Crete, follows – famed for The Palace of Knossos, a major center of Minoan civilization and the mythological home of the labyrinth and its Minotaur, then Rhodes and lastly Limassol – the second-largest city in Cyprus, located between the ancient sites of Amathous and Kourion.
