TUI Cruises agrees partnership with energy company Mabanaft
TUI Cruises agrees partnership with energy company Mabanaft. Hamburg company is to supply the cruise line with climate-friendly methanol.
Hamburg, January 25, 2024. The use of low-emission fuels is a crucial factor on the way to climate-neutral cruising. With the Mein Schiff 7, TUI Cruises will be putting one of the first cruise ships into service from summer 2024 that has been equipped to operate with methanol and, in the future, with green methanol. The ship’s propulsion is almost CO 2 neutral.
Supplying the fuels of the future
A core element of TUI Cruises’ 2030 sustainability strategy is to establish early alliances with suppliers of alternative fuels to ensure a secure supply of their two cruise fleets, Mein Schiff and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.
To this end, the cruise line has signed an agreement with the Hamburg energy company Mabanaft to develop a long-term, strategic collaboration, thereby setting an important milestone on this path. The agreement envisages meeting ships’ future needs for green methanol in German ports. In the next stage, deliveries can be expanded to other ports in Europe.
Wybcke Meier, CEO TUI Cruises: “Climate-neutral cruising is a question of the right technologies and long-term strategies. We have both. On the one hand, the ongoing equipping of our fleets with innovative drives, as well as securing their supply with alternative fuels – through cooperation with partners such as Mabanaft. This is how we will achieve our goals.”
Two strong partners
Mabanaft is one of the leading independent energy companies in Germany and a specialist in innovative energy concepts. The company supports its customers in the transition to cleaner fuels with alternative solutions. To supply the required green methanol, Mabanaft is currently preparing the necessary infrastructure for storage and refueling in Hamburg and other ports.
“Green methanol will play a crucial role in the decarbonization of shipping,” says Volker Ebeling, Senior Vice President New Energy, Supply & Infrastructure at Mabanaft. “This agreement with TUI Cruises is another important step in this direction and an important contribution to climate-friendly cruising.”
Offering the first climate-neutral cruises by 2030 and achieving CO 2-neutral cruise operations by 2050 are the declared climate goals of TUI Cruises. The TUI Group cruise lines are the first and only ones on the cruise market to have their planned CO 2 reductions audited by the independent Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), which is supported by the United Nations, among others. No other cruise line in the world is currently committed to an absolute and ambitious climate protection goal.
