Wintering artfully: Six ships, 104 port calls in 27 countries
The well-known painting “Wanderers above the Sea of Fog”, created in 1818, is considered a symbol of the longing for freedom and adventure. It shows a figure looking into the distance while surrounded by a sea of fog. It is in the collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. Last Saturday, as part of the departure parade of the Hamburg Cruise Days, Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises, sent a 2 meter tall sculpture sketching the silhouette of the “Wanderer” on board the Mein Schiff 6. “Art has a tradition on TUI Cruises ships. There are galleries with a wide variety of art styles, studios where guests can create their own works and even a ship that travels the seas dedicated to art”; says Wybcke Meier, CEO TUI Cruises. “The cooperation with the Hamburger Kunsthalle is a logical consequence of this and the hiker who will travel around the world on the ships is a welcome guest who continues the tradition of TUI Cruises.”
Until March 2024, the “Wanderer” will sail around the world on six of the cruise operator’s ships, including the premium brand Mein Schiff and the luxury and expedition ships of the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises brand. After 28,449 nautical miles, the hiker returns to Hamburg on March 20, 2024 on board the small HANSEATIC nature and is welcomed by Julian Pfitzner, CEO Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.
During the upcoming journey from Hamburg across the Atlantic Ocean, including destinations in North, Central and South America, the orange aluminum figure, which is based on the hiker’s back view, will change ships seven times.
Anyone who would like to follow the hiker’s upcoming journey and cannot be there live on board can do so on the websites of the respective ships on the daily updated webcams.
