On June 8th, the United Nations celebrates World Oceans Day – careful use of water on the Mein Schiff fleet

Since 2009, June 8th has been dedicated to the oceans worldwide. The United Nations proclaimed this day to draw attention to the dangers to the fragile marine habitat and to take appropriate measures to protect the oceans. As a cruise company, TUI Cruises feels it has a responsibility to protect the oceans in a targeted and sustainable manner. The Mein Schiff fleet, one of the brands of TUI Cruises, is therefore taking measures ranging from the economical use of sea and fresh water to comprehensive and state-of-the-art waste water treatment plants, nature conservation projects in the marine ecosystem and raising awareness among cruise guests. All Mein Schiff activities contribute to TUI Cruises’ “Sustainability Strategy 2030”. The vision behind it: to be able to offer the first climate-neutral cruises by 2030.

Measures taken by the Mein Schiff fleet: protect and avoid
The Mein Schiff fleet acts according to a clear self-commitment that goes beyond the legal requirements: All waste water produced on board is cleaned several times mechanically, biologically and chemically in the modern waste water treatment plants and, in the final step, UV disinfected. Only treated waste water goes overboard, and only outside the three or 12 nautical mile zone. For the Baltic Sea, which is a particularly sensitive body of water, there are strict limits in waste water with regard to phosphate and nitrate. For this purpose, the Mein Schiff 1 was just equipped with the so-called “HELCOM upgrade” during its last stay in the shipyard, which will also allow the discharge of waste water in this region in the future.

Another important contribution to the protection of the oceans is the avoidance of microplastics. For several years now, there has been an agreement with partners in shops, spas and hairdressing salons not to offer or use any cosmetics with microplastics. However, in order to protect the oceans, it is not only important to save microplastics, but also all other types of plastic. The goal: a plastic-free cruise.   As part of TUI Cruises’ plastic reduction program “WASTELESS”, 30 million plastic and disposable items were saved in the first year alone.
The careful and economical use of water is also constantly being optimised. Be it by avoiding unnecessary changes of bed linen and towels in the guest area, even more modern and water-saving devices in the laundry or by sensor-controlled water taps. These measures enabled the water consumption per person and overnight stay to be reduced significantly.

Protecting the diversity of the seas together

In addition, it is important to the Hamburg shipping company to sensitize the guests to environmentally relevant issues together with their very committed crew. Be it as part of the fleet’s own infotainment program or through small signs in the cabin that point out to the guest how they can make a small but decisive contribution to saving resources in the areas of water, electricity and chemicals. But that’s not all: With special and child-friendly offers, even the little guests on board the Mein Schiff fleet are made aware of the need to protect the seas. For example, there is a WAS IST WAS Mein Schiff & Meer scrapbook, which gives children exciting knowledge about the oceans, their inhabitants and much more.

From the very beginning, TUI Cruises has been committed to preserving biodiversity in the sea and has already supported a wide range of nature conservation projects, such as Sperm Whales eV, the International Animal Welfare Fund (IFAW) and SECORE, which are trying to counteract the massive decline in coral reefs with a coral breeding station.

The Sustainability Strategy 2030
The new, ambitious sustainability strategy is based on the three pillars Planet, People, Progress and defines the fields of action for the future: climate protection through fuel transformation and energy efficiency as well as a circular business model and protection of ecosystems (Planet); Destination responsibility through shore excursions with a small ecological footprint and a sustainable supply chain along the entire product range, as well as raising awareness of customers and employees for sustainable products (people); in addition, a sustainable corporate transformation through redesign of products, innovation promotion and digitization and the further integration of sustainability into the core processes of the company (progress).
