L’acqua santa e l’Elbphilharmonie: l’ottava nave prende vita.

Holy water and the Elbphilharmonie – the eighth nave comes to life. Emotional keel-laying of the new building of the new ship class from Mein Schiff

06/23/2023 – Exactly one year ago, the steel cutting of the eighth ship of the Mein Schiff fleet took place in the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. That was the start of construction of a new ship class at TUI Cruises.

The laying of the keel of this ship was celebrated at the same place, in keeping with the old shipbuilding tradition. Coins, including one with the image of Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, were locked in a box and welded to the ship with the box by TUI Cruises CEO Wybcke Meier and Cristiano Bazzara, director of Fincantieri. An emotional ceremony that also seals the new cooperation with the shipyard. As a sign of Christian seafaring, Roberto Benvenuto, pastor of the shipyard, blessed this new building with prayers and holy water.

“The keel laying ceremony of this eighth ship was particularly emotional. The new building is taking shape more and more every day. We are looking forward to this new class of ship that we have developed together with Fincantieri for Mein Schiff and our guests in recent years,” says Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises.

Sustainable growth: First gas-powered ship

TUI Cruises is also focusing on environmental and climate protection with the new ship class: the new building runs on liquid gas. In the future, the ship can also be operated with low-emission and climate-friendly BIO and E-LNG – an important step towards climate-neutral cruising.

“The investment in LPG-powered ships is an important milestone on the way to emission-free and climate-neutral cruises. LNG serves as a bridging technology here. In the future, we will use BIO-LNG, which is generated either from biogenic sources or synthetically from renewable energy,” explains Wybcke Meier.
