MSC CROCIERE SVILUPPA OCEAN CAY MSC MARINE RESERVE PER MIGLIORARE L’ESPERIENZA DEGLI OSPITI E LA CONSERVAZIONE DEL MARE
Lo sviluppo include servizi aggiuntivi per i passeggeri, nuovi alloggi per il personale, nuove infrastrutture ambientali e il Marine Conservation Center di MSC Foundation
MSC Crociere ha annunciato un nuovo programma di sviluppo delle infrastrutture per la Riserva Marina MSC di Ocean Cay alle Bahamas. Gli accordi sono stati firmati durante una cerimonia tenutasi a Bimini alla presenza del primo ministro del paese, l’onorevole Philip Davis, del vice primo ministro, ministro del turismo, degli investimenti e dell’aviazione, l’onorevole Chester Cooper, insieme ad altri funzionari governativi.
L’ulteriore investimento della compagnia di crociere sull’isola rimane fedele alla visione originale, che era quella di creare un impatto positivo a lungo termine per l’ambiente e le comunità locali. Lo sviluppo porterà un beneficio significativo per l’economia delle Bahamas e genererà posti di lavoro sia per i lavori di costruzione che per i lavori a lungo termine sull’isola.
Verranno apportati miglioramenti all’isola con servizi aggiuntivi per gli ospiti di MSC Crociere che visitano la destinazione, nonché nuovi servizi e alloggi per il personale, infrastrutture ambientali e miglioramenti operativi e tecnici.
Le strutture per gli ospiti saranno migliorate con l’introduzione di centri escursionistici per supportare le attività di sport acquatici e tour dell’isola, nonché un centro per immersioni e snorkeling in mare e ulteriori punti vendita di cibo e bevande, tra le altre strutture.
Il Marine Conservation Center della MSC Foundation sarà costruito come base per biologi, esperti di barriera corallina e studenti. Ospiterà padiglioni interattivi, una sala conferenze e vasche espositive di coralli, offrendo opportunità educative agli ospiti sull’importanza dell’ecosistema marino e sulla necessità di proteggere gli oceani del mondo.
L’isola ospita il programma Super Coral della MSC Foundation, considerato un contributo fondamentale alla comprensione contemporanea della resilienza della barriera corallina in tutta la regione.
La Fondazione MSC sostiene programmi per studenti laureati progettati per affrontare e mitigare i cambiamenti nella resilienza termica delle barriere coralline in tutto l’Atlantico occidentale tropicale. I vivai di coralli di Ocean Cay prosperano con specie di coralli endemici giovani e sani, ma in grave pericolo di estinzione, che rappresentano la speranza nel ripristino di questi fragili ecosistemi.
Lo sviluppo vedrà anche l’installazione di un terzo parco solare come parte dell’obiettivo di MSC Crociere di raggiungere zero emissioni di gas serra per Ocean Cay, un impianto avanzato di trattamento delle acque reflue, un piano paesaggistico per diversificare ulteriormente e sviluppare l’ambiente sostenibile sull’isola con piante autoctone e adattive. alberi, erbe e arbusti per fornire controllo dell’erosione, migliorare la vegetazione e sostenere la salute dell’ecosistema.
Nuovi edifici ricettivi forniranno nuovi servizi per il personale dell’isola, che vedrà un aumento del personale da 150 a 280.

Development includes additional amenities for passengers, new staff accommodation, new environmental infrastructure and MSC Foundation’s Marine Conservation Centre
Geneva, Switzerland – November 21, 2023 – MSC Cruises announced a new infrastructure development program for Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in The Bahamas. The heads of agreement was signed at a ceremony in Bimini attended by the country’s Prime Minister The Honorable Philip Davis, The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation Honorable Chester Cooper, along with other government officials.
The cruise line’s further investment to the island stays true to the original vision, which was to create a positive long-term impact to the environment and the local communities. The development will see a significant benefit for the Bahamian economy and will generate jobs both for the construction work as well as the long-term jobs on the island.
Enhancements will be made to the island with additional amenities for MSC Cruises’ guests who visit the destination, as well as new amenities and accommodation for staff, environmental infrastructure, and operational and technical improvements.
Guest facilities will be enhanced with the introduction of excursion centers to support watersport activities and island tours, as well as a sea dive and snorkel center, and additional food and beverage outlets, among other facilities.
The MSC Foundation’s Marine Conservation Centre will be built as a base for biologists, coral reef experts and students. It will house interactive pavilions, a lecture hall and coral exhibition tanks, providing educational opportunities to guests on the importance of the marine ecosystem and the need to protect the world’s oceans.
The island is home to the MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Program, which is considered a critical contribution in the contemporary understanding of coral reef resilience throughout the region.
The MSC Foundation supports graduate student programs designed to address and mitigate changes in thermal resilience of coral reefs throughout the tropical Western Atlantic. The coral nurseries at Ocean Cay are thriving with young and healthy – yet critically endangered species of endemic – reef building corals, representing hope in restoring these fragile ecosystems.
The development will also see a third solar farm installed as part MSC Cruises’ aim to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions for Ocean Cay, an advanced wastewater treatment plant, a landscaping plan to further diversify and develop the sustainable environment on the island with native and adaptive trees, grasses, and shrubs to provide erosion control, improve vegetation and support ecosystem health.
New accommodation buildings will provide new amenities for island staff, which will see an increase in staff numbers from 150 to 280.
The company also pledged, as part of its ongoing social responsibility and commitment to invest in future generations of seafarers, that it will support the LJM Maritime Academy and the University of The Bahamas to enhance the training of Bahamians seeking to enter the maritime sector.
MSC Cruises transformed Ocean Cay from an industrial sand excavation site to a flourishing marine reserve and private island destination that opened in 2019. The island has since won several prestigious awards for both tourism and environmental stewardship.
MSC Cruises will deploy its largest capacity in the North American market during the winter 2023-24 season with five ships – MSC Divina, MSC Magnifica, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Seascape and MSC Seashore – all vessels visiting Ocean Cay.
